What's a General Surgeon?
During this period of training, candidates will need to complete a number of examinations, educational courses, and undergo continuous assessment, culminating in a final examination.
Most General Surgeons will then undertake a further period of one to two years of training, known as a Fellowship, to gain further skills and experience.
What do General Surgeons do?
The General Surgeon will treat a variety of abdominal conditions including gall bladder disease, bowel cancer, appendicitis, intestinal obstruction and hernias. General Surgeons also perform upper endoscopy (gastroscopy) and colonoscopy procedures.
General Surgeons treat breast cancer, skin cancers including melanoma, and surgical conditions of the thyroid and parathyroid gland. General Surgeons are also consulted in the treatment of abdominal pain.
